An Upcoming Documentary Film

SHAPED BY WATER

The Story of Salt Spring Island’s Freshwater Journey

On a rock in the Salish Sea, stewards and scientists share freshwater’s journey.

Watch the preview of our short film pilot below and scroll through to find out how you can join us in creating the next iteration of the film, to educate and inspire thousands of people!

What’s next.

We want to go to the next level with our important educational work, creating a full-length documentary film to show what we know about our island’s freshwater, showcasing island freshwater stewardship in all its forms and enrolling future stewards and ambassadors in the process. Our recent short film shows what’s possible!

  • Team.

The film makers - a coalition of like-minded - island stewards and scientists, passionate about sharing this island’s freshwater story, and about doing the right thing for our island’s natural systems. Salt Spring’s freshwater is intimately linked to our island's watersheds. Raising awareness of the science behind freshwater capture on an island and the role of our island's natural ecosystems in driving and maintaining freshwater quality, in groundwater recharge, as CO2 sinks and for recreation and well being are paramount.

  • Education.

Freshwater on an island is a finite resource. Despite what may feel like copious rainfall, very little of the water stays on the island. A community knowledge of freshwater is essential for us to be able to collaborate in managing a delicate water balancing act, for the natural environment and for the island's people. It is a balance that may deteriorate over time with climate change, or with destruction of the natural ecosystems by human activity. Today, we need more stewards and we need future ambassadors for stewardship. Education is key.

  • Partnerships.

Freshwater stewardship is not possible without building networks. We are indebted to The Salt Spring Island Water Preservation Society, The Quw’utsun Stqeeye’ Learning Society, and Transition Salt Spring (& Ecological Research Network) , for their important contributions to this work.

SHAPED BY WATER: News and Partner Stories

A delicate balance.

Our new documentary film will raise awareness of the challenging island freshwater balance, engage and build our island’s stewardship community & capacity and perhaps, for other groups, act as a beacon for what flagship stewardship can look like.

Our island's freshwater is sacred, supporting our community and our island’s natural systems - the interconnectedness of all things. There is an incredible amount of work going on, and in, our island’s watersheds, both science and stewardship. We want to share what is happening, what this tells us about our island’s water, and how this can influence our island’s watershed stewardship and water stewardship in other places.

It starts with you.
