Together, we’ve preserved the Larmour lands

Thanks to XYZ, lots H and F of the Larmour Lands are now protected from logging and other development pressures.

Together, they constitute 46 acres (18.5 hectares) of vital, biodiverse wetland and forest in the Cusheon Lake watershed.

Restoration has already begun on the valley-bottom portion. The portion within the Agricultural Land Reserve — which is not eligible for covenant protection — is protected by a profit à prendre arrangement with XYZ, and will be XYZ.

Project benefits

  • Protect forest & wetlands

    Vital wetlands and forests filter and purify water as it percolates through natural soils. Natural filtration benefits groundwater in wells, critical sources of potable water for local residents. Mature coastal Douglas fir and groves of Western red cedar provide habitat for several species at risk 

  • Conserve biodiversity

    Species at risk include the Western screech owl, pygmy owl, night hawk, and the blue-grey taildropper slug,red-legged frogs, newts, salamanders, the Mexican freetail bat (known as the fastest creature in level flight), and the threaded vertigo and Pacific sideband snails

  • Reduce carbon emissions

    When the neighbouring 45 acres were cut in 2018-20, 15,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide were emitted. It will take 60 years for any newly planted forest to be a net sequester of carbon

  • Honour Mike Larmour's legacy

    Mike Larmour was one of WPS’s five co-founders. He dedicated his life to preserving and protecting water resources and the healthy watersheds that make them possible. By purchasing his land, we continue his work.

  • Connect habitat areas

    When several protected areas form a larger conservation area, the health and function of an ecosystem is enhanced. Several adjacent lots have conservation covenants; with Lots H and then F protected, 46 acres (about 18.5 hectares) of unbroken natural habitat will be created goes here
