Stewardship & Film-making Perspectives - Salt Spring Island Conservancy

The mission of the Salt Spring Island Conservancy is to protect and enhance the natural values of the island and its surrounding waters by acquiring land or covenants, and by educating landholders and the public toward improved land and water stewardship. The Conservancy recently acquired the Creekside Rainforest Nature Reserve along Cusheon Creek, protects and restores wetlands at our other nature reserves and provides stewardship advice to scores of private landowners on Salt Spring. Thus, the “Shaped By Water” film-making project aligns closely with the goals and practices of the Conservancy.

To conserve high quality abundant water, for drinking and for biodiversity, we must conserve the forests and other natural ecosystems on our watersheds so that run-off is absorbed by the vegetation and soil and can percolate into our aquifers. Protection of watersheds leads to conservation of our wetlands, one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on our island, and to protection of marine resources where creeks enter the oceans. We are happy to partner on a project that will raise awareness of and contribute to sustainability of our freshwater resources.
